Intel Fortran is natively available on all platforms but on Windows is virtually the only free option, thanks to the integration with Visual Studio.
The Intel Fortran Compiler (ifort) is a proprietary compiler developed by Intel it can be used free of charge for non commercial uses as a part of the Intel oneAPI HPC Toolkit. gfortran is natively available on Linux and MacOS it is possible to get it on Windows with Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) and other workarounds. GNU Fortran, or gfortran, part of the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC), is a Free and Open Source Fortran compiler which is still under active development and supports all the features of the latest Fortran 2018 standard. Various Fortran compilers are available, a comprehensive list is available on the web site of the Fortran Programming Language. On Linux many different, arguably better, alternatives are available. In this guide Visual Studio 2019 combined with the Intel Fortran compiler is proposed as a do-it-all Fortran IDE for Windows.
